Who can participate in Checkpoint Veteran programs?
Any veteran of any branch, any era, with any discharge status short of dishonorable, and for family events, their spouses, kids, and grandkids. You don't need a disability rating, a referral, or any paperwork beyond proof of service.
How much do programs cost?
Nothing. Every Checkpoint program (guided hunts, fishing trips, wellness workshops, peer circles) is completely free for participating veterans. Donors, partners, and volunteers cover the costs so you never have to.
I've never hunted or fished. Can I still come?
Yes, you're exactly who these programs are for. Guides and mentors teach everything from square one, all gear is provided, and nobody keeps score. Some of our best trips have been someone's first.
I don't own any gear. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We maintain loaner rods, firearms, packs, and camping equipment for every program, including youth sizes and adaptive equipment. Show up in boots and we'll handle the rest.
What if I have a disability or mobility challenge?
Come anyway, that's a promise, not a slogan. Our adaptive fishing program runs accessible docks, adaptive rod mounts, and one-on-one support, and we plan every adaptive event around the veterans attending it. Tell us what you need and we'll build the day.
Are the peer support circles therapy?
No, and they don't pretend to be. Circles are veterans talking with veterans, led by trained peer facilitators, with total confidentiality. Many members use them alongside professional counseling, and we're glad to connect you with veteran-competent counselors when you want that step.
How do I sign up for an event?
Check the events calendar, pick something, and reach out through the contact page (online sign-up is coming). Spots on trips fill fast and first-time participants get priority.
Can I volunteer if I'm not a veteran?
Absolutely. Many of our volunteers never served. They run boats, cook, haul gear, take photos, and keep events moving. Fill out the volunteer form and we'll find your spot on the crew.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Checkpoint Veteran is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You'll receive a receipt for your records, and you can see how funds are used on our Financials & Transparency page.
I'm worried about a veteran right now. What do I do?
If there's any immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise call the Veterans Crisis Line, dial 988 and press 1, or text 838255. It's free, confidential, and staffed 24/7, often by veterans. Then, when the moment has passed, reach out to us, we'll help them find their people.
